- Computer security is one of the major buzzwords in IT today. Academic freedom is another that university IT staffs deal with every day. Securing a network in such an environment is a unique challenge. Here will be presented ideas on how to handle the problems of securing a university network.

- Many college students bemoan that art history classes are just plain boring. The addition of new technologies in the lecture theater has improved their reception and their grasp of the material. - To overcome students' reluctance to participate in e-learning courses, the inclusion of the discussion board must be carefully planned before adding it to the course requirements. If done poorly, the discussion board can increase student resentment and faculty workload. If done well the discussion board can increase community and higher level thinking skills.

- Many IT organizations have prepared disaster plans for emergency situations. Once this is set in place, "succession planning" is also needed. What do you do if key personnel are unavailable for a time period due to death, extended leave or sickness? Are you prepared at a moments notice for coverage of their activities?

- "Faculty and Design Staff Collaboration: A Case Study for Online Learning"
- This presentation will focus on the collaboration between faculty and multimedia professionals in the development of an online course on the two-year college offered by the University of Louisville. The course - part of the curricula of the Masters of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy programs in Higher Education Administration - makes extensive use of high-end multimedia in presenting course lectures and other instructional content.

- This session will discuss the development of a new Medical Center Library class designed to meet the information needs of the wireless pocket pc user. Each participant was provided a Dell Axim-x50 preloaded with handheld resources to standardize instruction. Other mobile products such as NLM's PubMed Anywhere were also featured.

- "Having It All: Advanced Web Accessibility at KYVL [s5]"
- KYVL (the Kentucky Virtual Library) has recently converted to a fully accessible and feature packed Web redesign. This project was directed by various laws, both state and federal, as well as World Wide Web Consortium recommendations. Find out what we have done and how the end result of the intersection of Web Standards and advanced accessibility features can result in a dynamic Web presence.

- "Identity Management at the University of Louisville"
- The University of Louisville implemented its Secure Identity Management System in February 2002. Built on the foundation of Novell's eDirectory and Nsure Identity Manager, the system automatically provisions and de-provisions computer accounts for faculty, staff, and students. This presentation will provide an overview of issues pertinent to the implementation and support of the system.

- "Integrating the IDEA Student Ratings of Instruction Process with Blackboard"
- The IDEA Center (Kansas State) has dramatically improved the online deployment of student satisfaction surveys by importing course data (instructor and student lists) directly from the Blackboard Learning System. This session explains how and why EKU now distributes many IDEA surveys online, rather than through classroom paper forms.

- "Intra-Campus Communications - No one Told Us!!!"
- How is it that we have all these meetings and think everyone has been informed, to only hear "No One Told Us!!”? Northern Kentucky University will discuss some of the things we have put into place from an IT prospective to keep the university communities informed of Technology issues, projects, changes, new developments, so on. Yet no matter what we do, we still have a terrible problem with communication. We will discuss some of our latest struggles; the inclusion of Transfer GPA into our Cumulative GPA, College Reorganization, the new Winter Term and the Prism project (ERP). We would like to have an open discussion on Intra Campus Communication. What are other institutions doing to improve their campus wide communication and how are you breaking through the barriers between Academics and Administrative? We hope this discussion will cross all areas of institution communication, not limiting it to technology.

- Students often perceive the Web as one of their most important research tools. Adapting web research so that it enables the user to mine for scholarly, academic information requires learning some internet history, some internet theory, and developing refined search techniques and analytical abilities. The latest tools and techniques that support this kind of searching will be explored.

- "Licensing Electronic Content Through Cooperative Agreements"
- The SAALCK institutions have achieved success negotiating and constructing cooperative licensing agreements for electronic content. This has resulted in a huge cost savings across Kentucky as well as innovative approaches to information access. This presentation will explore the process of putting together an agreement with the issues to consider and negotiation methods. A panel of library directors will make the presentation.

- "Making Videos Accessible - Adding Syncronized Closed Captioning with MAGpie"
- To improve the accessibility of videos, Murray State University's Center for Teaching, Learning & Technology has added synchronized closed captioning and transcripts for short videos used in online courses. We will discuss techniques for using MAGpie, lessons learned, media player limitations, and benefits of adding these accessibility features.

- "Online Assessment Techniques"
- Ideally, web-based or online courses are taking by the distance students who have any complications to come on campus. It is rare that the web-based or online educators and students meet or know each other. Although it is clearly advantageous for asynchronous students to access information and content anywhere and anytime, all teaching and learning are done by the distance not face to face. Obviously, it is difficult for educators to know whether or not students understand, learn, and do their works by themselves and measure the students' achievement and effective of teaching and learning process that how efficiently they are. So do students? Students learn thru the materials and distance interaction. They can get limited level of helps or feedback from the instructors or classmates unlike the immediate traditional classroom's. Due to both a lack of appropriate instruments and the significant of being able to assess Web course effectiveness, thus instructors need to sensitively.

- The reports from plagiarism detection programs such as SafeAssignments (SA) and Turnitin display valuable evidence of students' use or misuse of source materials. Instructors who want to use these tools will benefit greatly from this discussion of the careful interpretation of results from SafeAssignments at EKU.

- "Resolving Copyright Issues in Teaching: The Role of Fair Use and Other Strategies"
- Apprehension about the use of copyrighted materials can arise from common misunderstandings about copyrighted works. The law does place limits on the use of some works, but also provides much flexibility in defining those limits. This workshop will explore the role of fair use in teaching and identify practical approaches to making use of common resources.

- Murray State recently completed an online workshop for over 100 Kentucky faculty. The workshop provided a microcosm of online learning from a support, faculty and student perspective. In this presentation we will share what we did, what we learned, what surprised us and how we adapted this workshop to fit the principles of course redesign.

- "Wizard Your Way to ADA Accessibility [PowerPoint]"
- The University of Illinois Urban-Champagne has created a plugin for Microsoft Office. This plugin opens a wizard that walks you through making a word or powerpoint document ADA accessible - without knowing HTML. We will use the wizard to create ADA compliant pages and view the results.
